Joel Wright Art is a self taught artist that began painting in 1990 at the age of 15 in Texarkana, Tx. Wright spent time from 1992-1999 in Denton, Tx without stepping foot in a single art class at University of North, Tx.
"I enjoyed having the college experience without attending the classes. It was always a great mystery what they were doing there. And I left it a mystery." Joel says with laughter.
Joel began tattooing in 1999 at the age of 24 in Texarkana, Tx. He met his wife Sarah shortly after.
"Tattooing was a ticket to creative freedom and I took it and never looked back. What is most interesting about tattooing is the range of freedom in expression. It is very personal and that art stays with you constantly. It is certainly the most intimate form of art." Joel
Wright paints expressive surrealism in oil on linen and canvas and large acrylic abstract in black and white and subtle earth tones on a variety of substrates. Wright combines styles in a single painting and uses versatility as a medium.
"Unifying the artwork has been the greatest awakening. For over 25 years I allowed myself to be unattached, undefined and unlimited in my artwork. I study many of the mediums and styles.
I allow myself to do everything without blocks. This serves as a distillation process that has helped me understand the creative process without bias, judgement or expectations.
With this approach limitations become appreciated. That is the refining process.
The reflective quality of spiritual seeking and the inquisitive mindset of creating artwork is undeniable.
Who I am beyond the world can't be answered in self expression. Self expression is however, the joy of being who I am. Love and devotion is what goes into it." Joel
Wrights early influences of entheogens and shamanism cracked open the veil of illusion and the appreciation of surrealism. Later he is heavily influenced by Buddhism and Tao te Ching and adapted to abstract artwork and watercolor. Most recently he has attuned to Hinduism and it has helped him merge all of the influences into one.
Seeing deeper into our philosophical understanding of the nature of ourselves and the universe is closely related to science and art. All forms of perception are ways of understanding who we are and the world we live in.
Art can be an experiment, a mediation, a prayer or simply playing with form.
